Chapter 1: Introduction To Gameboy Programming

Objective:

After this lesson, the user should know what a Gameboy is.  Where to buy one.  How much they cost.  What other hardware a Gameboy Programmer should acquire.  Where to buy the hardware.  What software a Gameboy Programmer needs.  Where to download that software.

Hardware:

There are 2 essential pieces of Hardware every Gameboy Programmer needs.

1.)     A Nintendo Gameboy Color

2.)     A cart writer

The Nintendo Gameboy Color can be found in just about any store that sells videogames.  They cost between $65-$80.  Other accessories that will come in handy to the Gameboy include a rechargeable battery pack and a link cable.  Both can be found at your local video game supplier.  Each costs less than $10 each.

The cart writer is a little more difficult to come by.  There are two very popular unofficial cart writers.

1.)   Bung’s Xchanger

2.)   Gametech’s GameJack

Nintendo has its own cart writer, but it costs $3000!  The two mentioned above costs about $100 each including a reprogramable flash cart.  One can acquire a GameJack at www.lik-sang.com or www.cd64.com.  On
www.lik-sang.com, there is also a third brand of cart writers, but it is less popular.

There are other programs that may be used later on in this tutorial, but as I get to them, I’ll give out the details on how to get them and how much they cost.  There are other programs out there that can be used also, but these are the programs the tutorial will discuss.  Even though most, (if not all), of the programs discussed through this book are freeware, they are just as good as the professionals, if not better.

Assignment:

At the end of each chapter, there will be a brief assignment (Including this one).  Today’s assignment is to download these programs.

Preview:

In the next chapter, I will discuss how to set up these programs into a fully functioning developer’s environment.

This is what I like to call.  “Hidden Text”  There are a few ways of seeing this text including the method you are using now.  Anyway, this weeks hidden message is that “Little Washu” is the coolest chick I know. :8)

Small request:

I am a poor college student.  I really need help getting through college.  If you will like to make a donation to my college fund or my fund to upgrade my dinosaur computer please email me at sega@world-of-nintendo.com.  If you have any computer parts you can donate to me, that will also be greatly appreciated.

Legal Crap:

Nintendo lawyers are idiots.  They claim that you, the average U.S. citizen, thinks that I own their logos and stuff by including it in my book.  I don’t.  But because I have confidence that you, an educated person interested in learning a little programming, I realize that I really don’t have to say that the Gameboy logo and any other logo that you already realize is owned by Nintendo is theirs.  Note this though, by looking at any part of this document you agree that you are not a lawyer and if you are that you will jump up and down 72 times in public and recite the words, “I eat the toenails of wild boars.”  Also, by just opening this document, you agree, no matter who you are, that you will not sue me or have any other persons sue me over this fine document.  It is a very sad world of greed that requires me to write this fine print.  Lawyers do not protect society, but harm it.  As a United States citizen, I elect legislators to create laws, not lawyers.  Any rules created by lawyers are not applicable to me or any other US citizen.  By reading this document, you agree.  Anyway, I can’t be sued by anyone because this disclaimer claims I can’t.  (Lawyers do this all the time).
